Blow Fly Information & Facts
Blow flies are often metallic in appearance and range in length from about 8 to 10 mm.
Blow flies are attracted to decaying meat and are typically the first insects to arrive after an animal dies. When the blow fly appears indoors, it means there is a breeding source close by that needs to be eradicated.
Adult blow flies feed primarily on flower nectar, plant sap, and other sugary materials. Female blow flies lay their eggs on the carcasses of dead animals. The eggs hatch quickly and the blow fly maggots feed on the decaying flesh. The blow fly life cycle goes from eggs to larva (or blow fly maggots) to pupa to adult in as little as a week.
